Reality Check

Every now and then I forget that the rest of the world doesn't even know what poetry is let alone take it seriously--very strange to spend so much time reading the blogs of other poets, the intensity of the conversations in the sphere and then stepping out of the subculture.

Hey, we're back! We need a vacation from our vacation, but we had a great time. Two blocks from the beach, good company, plenty of sunblock and way too many toddlers and teenagers. I took some pics, but can't find my camera. I also can't find my cell phone (Hannah, it's here somewhere and stayed here all week. Yikes.)

Came home to the final galleys of Spring Tide. Very exciting to see my name in that font! I also was able to read the forward--connecting with a poet I admire and respect and at times have even revered, really it doesn't get any better. Looks like the musuem is shooting for an October reading. I should know pretty soon.

I see that big congrats are in order for C. Dale, Jeannine, Charlie, and Kristy. Way to go!!

I wonder if big congrats are in order for Stuart yet?

Hey, welcome back, Suzanne.

Not yet (on the congrats front), due date is Monday, so we're all just kind of . . . waiting. It's actually been pretty productive, in a trivial way--I've cleaned my desk drawers out for the first time in four years, for example.

I'll for sure say when to say hooray!

Welcome back Frischkorn I was just about ready to send out the life guards.
Millar gave this wonderful talk about some of things you addressed in your post. He said that poetry in itself is one of the purest art forms that’s why so many people who are painters, musicians are also attracted to it. But yes I understand the strange looks and if you say you are a poet instead of just simply saying a writer, the look gets even stranger.

Welcome home, Suzanne! What a beautiful pic, too (glad you found the camera).

Dear Suzanne,
Thanks for the congrats, and happy to have you back :) I love what Alberto Rios said in one of his lectures at PT - "A Day spent reading is a day well spent, but a life spent reading is a good life." There's lots worse things you could be doing with your time, and I like to think writing poetry is one of the few things in the world where you can actually communicate and connect with others, to make the world (dare I say it?) a better place. There's no loftier goal, as far as I am concerned, and I know I'm happier now, spending time reading and writing, than when I was clocking 80 hours at a big corp.

Welcome Back!

Oh, the strange looks we get when we venture outside the poetry bubble. I told someone once I was a poet, and they asked if my parents were disappointed....

I once told a an old high school aquaintance I ran into at a wedding that I was a poet and he asked "Are you depressed?"
