Winter Afternoons –
That oppresses, like the Heft
Of Cathedral Tunes –
Heavenly Hurt, it gives us –
We can find no scar,
But internal difference,
Where the Meanings, are –
None may teach it – Any –
'Tis the Seal Despair –
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the air –
When it comes, the Landscape listens –
Shadows – hold their breath –
When it goes, 'tis like the Distance
On the look of Death –
-- Emily Dickinson

I think this poem was quoted on a TV show I watched this week, and I want to say it was season 1 of Gilmore Girls.
"the Heft / Of Cathedral Tunes" is a beautiful moment of perfection in this poem -- but also is at the brain center of her literary argument with social and religious norms of her day. A great piece. Thanks for the post.
